How did Castro Valley get its name? I’m sure you want to know! Don Guillermo Castro was a lieutenant and government surveyor, who was paid with a land grant of about 28,000 acres. Castro then established his San Lorenzo ranch with his wife, family, and workers.
The first set of residents were the hunter-gatherer Ohlone Indians. Then, the Spanish influence came into the mix in 1797. This first European contact occurred with the establishment of the familiar Mission San Jose by the Franciscan Fathers.
We have been through several important eras. The California gold rush of the 1840s saw an influx of gold hunters to the area. But, not everyone hit it rich, and so they decided to live on sections of Don Castro’s ranch.
Eventually, bankruptcy caught up with Don Castro and parcels of his estate were sold off. Then we had several leading families like the Athertons, Culls, Luces, Jensens, Strobridges, and Kennedys.
Want to know a fun fact? Castro Valley was known for chicken ranching in the early 1900s. I wonder how they herded all of those chickens!
Our love of commerce started in the 1930s and continues today. Castro Valley is home to many types of businesses. A visit to one of our canyons will showcase cattle ranches. We are also home to many small- and medium-sized enterprises across several industries.
