Oakland’s rich history includes the early villages of the Costanoan Indians and the later Spanish colonies.
The Spanish gave land grants that were used to establish settlements. While logging was the first commercial activity, the California gold rush led to the development of a transit center for goods and people.
Horace Carpentier established a trans-bay ferry service to San Francisco, and subsequently acquired a townsite in 1852. Carpentier named this site “Oakland” because of the many oak trees that grew on the grassy plains. Some of these notable oaks can still be seen today. He then incorporated Oakland as a city in 1854.
The 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire lead to an influx of refugees to our city. Then the new San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and military and naval installations generated further population and industry growth.
