Here’s a fun quiz: What was Pleasanton’s former name? It was called Alisal during the time of the Spanish settlements. 

Our town also served as a mercantile stop on the goldfields’ route. Augustine Bernal established the first English-speaking settlement in 1850. 

When did we get our name change? In 1851, John W. Kottinger renamed our city after a distinguished Civil War general, Alfred Pleasonton. But, a clerk made a fortuitous spelling error, and we decided to keep it! 

The 1869 transcontinental railroads meant growth for Pleasanton. The great climate and abundant water brought ranchers and horse breeders, dairy farms, hop fields, and vineyards. Soon, we became the breadbasket for the Amador Valley and the site of the oldest American horse racing track. 

Pleasanton was incorporated in 1894. By 1900, we were a thriving community with our existing commercial activities. Then the sand and gravel industry emerged in the 1930s, which helped diversify our city’s economy.

Our Sustainable City grew rapidly during the 1960s and 1970s, and our population stands at over 82,000. Our 850-acre Hacienda Business Park was established in 1982. Now, we are home to several large corporations.
