Our city has its roots in the Ohlone Indians’ settlements, followed by Spanish conquests and the establishment of several missions.
Then we had the era of land grants and the creation of ranches. José Joaquin Estudillo was one of the first land grant holders and our city’s founder. He had several children, and his daughters married leading San Leandro figures John Ward and William Davis.
The gold rush of the 1840s generated conflicts between land grant holders and illegal squatters. However, they were often resolved by land parcel sales to these squatters, which were then converted into farms. Agricultural products such as wheat, barley, corn, peas, tomatoes, rhubarb, and apricots became mainstays. However, the most popular product was cherry, so even now we are still dubbed the “Cherry City”.
Ward and Davis were instrumental in developing our city. They subdivided a 200-acre land tract to map out a new townsite. In February 1855, the townsite was formally declared as San Leandro.
The next decade saw the completion of the transcontinental railway, which brought new commerce. Several factories, warehouses, and canneries developed along the rail lines, which aided the distribution of these goods.
San Leandro was incorporated as a town on March 21, 1872. The 1880s marked the rise of agricultural machinery. Daniel Best, an agribusinessman, created several innovations like the portable grain cleaner and separator, steam traction harvester and thresher, and the gas-powered traction engine.
Today, we are a thriving city with several industries. San Leandro is home to approximately 91,000 ethnically diverse residents. So, contact me to begin exploring some great homes for sale in San Leandro, CA.
